COURSE DESCRIPTION:
|
What this course IS:
"A broad
study of the "one-to-many" speaking contexts with a focus on developing
speaking and listening competence. Includes the message organization,
speech presentation, vocal and physical delivery of various types of
formal and informal speaking situations." (from college catalog) |
What it ISN'T: - NOT Oral Communication-part2 {although it does build on material covered in COST1600} - NOT a course in Advanced Public Speaking {although it does include P.S. activities} - NOT a workshop on Interview Techniques {although it does work on a speaker's "presence" } |

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
[CLOs]
Learning how to "sell"
your message .... and yourself,
too. In other words:
1. Students will apply their previous studies in Rhetoric, Public Address principles, and effective Vocal and Physical delivery to the construction of professional-level, oral presentations.
2. Students will be able to perform
appropriate listening behaviors, including an awareness of
nonverbal cues.
3.
4. Students will demonstrate adaptive competence-- i.e. becoming fluent and fluid in various contexts, including in-person or into a camera.
5. Students will demonstrate an awareness-of and sensitivity-to the influences of culture in communicating to diverse listener needs and abilities.

COURSE
PROCEDURES & EXPECTATIONS:
1. Regular attendance and participation in class & class activities- whatever the meeting format [in person/ remote-Synchronous/HyFlex/ Asynchronous]. Attendance, Punctuality, and Quality of Classroom Engagement all are taken into consideration during the final tabulation of the grades.
Due
to the participatory nature of this course, it is necessary to attend each
session. If you are absent more than 2 times you can not get more than a
B
in the course; more than 3-4 times, no more than a
C;
5 times, no more than a
D; if you are
absent 6 or more times, you will not pass. Only absences which are accompanied
by doctor
notes, university letters, or similar
documentation will be considered "excused". Additionally, 3 tardies (coming
in late)
= 1 absence!
https://www.shu.edu/student-life/upload/Student-Class-Absence-Student-FAQs.pdf
2.
All work must be submitted on time. Failure to do so
will result in a grade of "0" for that assignment.
3.
In addition to the several oral presentations, the written assignments will
include: written speech outlines / self critiques / peer reviews / 1-2
“in-class” Tests
/ Chapter quizzes / 1-2 Professor's Compilation quizzes/ Forum postings.
Overviews, Guidelines, and
Information sheets will be available via links to
this online syllabus.
4. Students are expected to understand, analyze, and apply the material covered in the textbook[via Launchpad], readings, and lecture notes.
5. Of course, there is a no-electronic-distractions policy for this class. This includes no-cell-phone-usage/ no-audible-pagers-or-alarms / etc. For in-person sessions, laptops will be used in class on a case-by-case basis.
6. Video/Camera-on Policies: Throughout the semester, you regularly will be expected to have your camera enabled (for instances of speaking as well as listening). Please be prepared by either ensuring your environment is visually appropriate or by learning how to enable virtual backgrounds in MS Teams.
7. Submission of assignments: Whenever possible, assignment drop-off slots will be created in Blackboard or in Launchpad as appropriate in order for the submission points to be accurately recorded. However, if there is ever a problem accessing the drop-off location for a given assignment, submission through email (Outlook) is permissible.

"Cheating and plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated in any Communication and the Arts course and will be dealt with severely. Such further action may include expulsion from the College of Communication and the Arts after review.
The College of Communication and the Arts' policy defines academic dishonesty as including, "but not limited to, cheating on tests and other course assignments and providing or receiving information without acknowledging the source. Cheating by plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying of text or research assignments, using another person's papers, research or assignments without citation, and representing work as the student's own, which is, in actuality, another's work."
