Rationale

This is a  _3- 5_minute [total], scored presentation with many learning goals including getting support & input from classmates. It combines two(2) delivery formats [manuscript + extemporaneous]  and also lets you demonstrate your skills of critical (i.e. analytical) thinking as you prepare commentary on your selected article.  In summary, you will select an important contemporary topic that interests you and has a relevance for your listeners in this class.  You will be reading an excerpt aloud from an article that in some way ties in to your central idea that you want to present to us. Then, in a brief extemporaneous talk, you will present an analysis of the perspective and points that were made in the article. At the end of the presentation, each speaker will be asked one substantive,  open-ended question.

 workshop steps:

1. Find an article on a topic that interests you (print or digital format)

2. Using the  enclosed Presentation Planner [click or scroll down],  create a brief combination presentation:  One-third of the presentation = reading a verbatim excerpt from the original article  &  two-thirds of the presentation = delivering your extemporaneously prepared commentary on the topic [i.e. It's a prepared talk & via notes]. The only reading-word-for-word delivery occurs when reading the article excerpt.

3. Self-videorecord your presentation  - either directly onto into LaunchPad or record on another device & upload. Designate that this is your first version for practice. Go to LaunchPad and look for the "Video Assessment - Article/Commentary - Practice Take

4. Ask each of your triad mates for their written coaching advice. They should be able to access the video through LaunchPad and enter feedback via the peer review function.{These are the same people you worked with for the Special Occasion workshop.}

5. Apply their recommendations & rework the presentation- This semester, you will deliver your Take 2 version as an in-person, in-class presentation. Refer to the presentation schedule to find out your assigned date.

6. If you decide to complete the optional, follow up self-critique,  write 1-2 paragraphs in which briefly address how skillfully you did (or didn't) handle the dual delivery styles: manuscript [reading verbatim] + extemporaneous [speaking from notes].  Also discuss how clearly your represented the theme of the article & your rationale to reaching to it the way you did. Submit this extra-credit item via email.

Preparation Procedure- a few more details

_Select an important contemporary topic that catches your attention and also is relevant to your audience. Some examples of articles are linked above-- after the FAQ's. Consider your position on the author's theme(s). You may want to seek our some additional writings on the topic &/or various sides of the topic. Since you are looking for an  article (either a feature article or an op-ed essay) to read from as part of your presentation.  When selecting your excerpt for reading out loud, remember  these criteria:

      (1) the excerpt segment should be fairly easy for a speaker to read aloud
        (2) the excerpt segment should be interesting for the AUDIENCE in this class to listen to.
(i.e.something that uses vivid language / paints verbal pictures)

        (3) the article's topic should be somehow relevant  to your personal background, interests, culture, etc.

_Conduct whatever additional "research" is necessary to fill out your message [see template below for speech outline contents]

_ Review the appropriate structure for "argumentation & support". A commentary is NOT just an opinionated rant.  [use your textbook or similar Oral Comm./Oral Rhet. materials]

 _Construct &  rehearse your presentation.

the talk's  format & Specifications

In summary:

About one third of the presentation is reading -- word for word-- an excerpt from the article you have chosen. The other 2/3’s of your time consists of you talking  extemporaneously [i.e. from prepared , bullet-point notes]  about your reactions to the article & its topic. Also let your listeners know why it caught your attention.

I. Introduction (= Attention Getter + Topic Preview + Thesis Statement)
II. Manuscript reading (= a written excerpt and/or block quote from your chosen article that coordinates with your talk's goal and topic)
III. Commentary (= your analysis of the argument being made in the article excerpt that you have read to us. These should be well thought-out comments (NOT the kind of "knee-jerk"  statements that people sometimes post in chatrooms).  It's not simply your opinion on the topic or your idea of how things should be. It is an analysis of the themes expressed by the writer.
IV. Conclusion (= closing sentence(s) , as necessary)

also use  appropriate Transitions in order to get you from the excerpt to your prepared reaction statements. Be sure your closing sentence provides an appropriate conclusion to your overall message.

NOTE:  This presentation also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your skill with different modes of speech delivery.

-  Introduction = Extemporaneous (delivered from notecards) [ 30-45 seconds]

Manuscript =  Manuscript-style (reading a piece of writing verbatim-with meaningful eye contact  [approx 30sec-1 minute] )

- Commentary =  Extemporaneous (delivered from notecards) [approx 2-3 minutes])

-Conclusion = Extemporaneous (delivered from notecards) [ 30-45 seconds] or Impromptu if possible

-Once all of these parts  are put together,  your total presentation will = 3-5 minutes.-

Emergency version work around:

being sure to label this second recording as "take two". For this Take-Two version  you must also upload a simple speech outline  [click or scroll down to bottom] which includes a paragraph on what your changed from take one to take two-- if anything. This should be done as a Word document & needs to go into its own Dropbox. For clarity the Take two video also goes into a different "spot" in LaunchPad.  7. By whatever means necessary,  find a way to have your triad mates hear you deliver both versions of your Article-Commentary presentations. Their written feedback is only required for the Practice version. The feedback for the Take-Two can be oral only.
