   -"This is a capstone course in Communication Studies that encompasses the history, theory and philosophy of communication while focusing on the research literature on the field and providing students with the opportunity to conduct original research in the area of Communication Studies."

 Students are encouraged to continue their research interests from previous courses and to incorporate related work from COMM 2135 [Communication Research Strategies] and COMM 3640 [Rhetorical Criticism]. However, you cannot resubmit work from a prerequisite course in order to satisfy an assignment in this senior seminar.

- Satisfying "Proficiencies": This is a Seton Hall University Reading/Writing-intensive course therefore it will include a significant amount of formal and informal writing, several hours of academic and professional reading per week, all contributing to at least one-third of the total course grade. / In reference to Information Fluency,  all class activities & presentation assignments are designed to enhance the students abilities to find, analyze, and incorporate information as well as develop their own research processes and strategies.

COURSE CALENDAR {subject to change via updates to this online version; stay tuned!}

1. The following calendar grid lists the dates of the units of study and the accompanying readings & links to certain assignments.  Additional written assignments, oral activities, worksheets, computer projects, etc. WILL  be added HERE on AN ONGOING basis.   The default location for these information pages will be via the professor's webpage (not Blackboard) .

2. This is a seminar, therefore classroom time will be primarily devoted to the clarification, exploration, and discussion of the issues generated by the readings and students' research. In other words, class sessions will be based on your readings and research, but will not simply "rehash" the same exact material in a verbatim manner. You can be better prepared for the classroom activities & discussions if you keep up on your readings.

Online Quiz #2 due by Saturday
- Available via Blackboard site only:  3/11 - 3/14

Dear COMM-5899 - As you may have seen in the recent announcement, SHU has issued new policies that affect some on-campus classes/activities/events (but not all!).  Since the announcement specifies that weekday, on-campus classes are canceled 3/11-3/15. this means that in a technical sense, we do not have class in 3/11. Consequently, your Proposal document should be emailed to me as an email attachment. Deadline = 3/11: 6:00pm. For this assignment, please put your name ONLY on the first page of your document  (no running headers) since I will be using an anonymous peer review technique via email since we will be unable to do it in person.

The additional adjustments to the course calendar will be made on this website by 3/16. Obviously, going forward, there will be a greater instructional reliance on ASYNCHRONOUS techniques:  readings, Professor slide shows, forum postings, and additional online quizzes. The Chapter discussion leaders probably will have to put their summaries in writing. If necessary, submission of personally-recorded video presentations may have to replace the research findings presentations.  Teamwork will still occur but some changes may be made to the formats of the deliverables.  This means that, similar to an online course, most activities will not occur on a Mon Weds from 3:30-4:45 basis—although there may be some “real-time” items.)

  Adjusted/"Remote" Calendar begins here:

Online Quiz #3   due by Fri

***PrePaper Conference info: To Review Your Plans For COMPLETING your actual investigations, analyses & WRITING your paper <click for appt sched>   section to be updated

Please note that the oral presentations of the final papers begin on _Mon  4/29/19_ & the submission of the "First-Submitted-Draft" of the final paper is due Weds 4/24/19 but under emergency situations, it might be accepted no later than noon, Fri. 4/26/19- but you have to "argue" your case successfully in order to achieve this extension.

You should come prepared to this appt. with: (1) an actual writing sample: approx. one page (2-3 paragraphs) to show me from whatever section you have written so far. If you have not done any writing yet, then you will need to do some BEFORE your conference! (If you don't have anything to show, conference will be cancelled)

(2) Any questions or concerns you have for me about the details of the final paper.

In other words, the Primary purpose for this conference is to "check in" :

* Maslow presentations =  (5=10 minutes)
(1) "We decided that using ________ statistics [descriptive-or- inferential] was the best way to analyze the data we collected."
(2) " We decided that using a __________  [histogram,chart,graph, etc]   was the most appropriate way to depict our statistical analysis."
