The runways and much of the base was built by RMK-BRJ. It was a construction company from CA I think and they used primarily Korean workers. It was a cost plus contract and if I am correct the runway incredibly thick. I saw a F-4 Phantom get a hot start one day and sat on the runway before the first of 6 650 pound bombs went off. The ammo could be heard going off for hours. In about 6 hours they pushed it off the runway and there was a crater about 6" deep. It was patched and the runway was opened again. The 555th was our Engineering Squadron, but they didn't build the base. I was in the Caribou outfit at Cam Rahn AFB.
