Before Concrete runaways

From Kevin McQuade, on Fri, 30 Nov 2001 17:29:29 GMT (in response to: Cam Rahn AFB)

Before there were concrete runways, I believe the Triple Nickle guys laided down the PSP and the Planked metal (can't remember what that stuff was called) runways and tarmac equivalent areas.

That would have been 66-67 time frame. I landed in 66 and the new runways were under construction. We landed on steel! Or, maybe it was that aluminum stuff!

I was with the 412th MMS till I went south and joined the 435th MMS at Phan Rang.

Ahhh..., memories..., living in tents with sandbag bunkers, eating c-rations and occasional hot-food in the mess tent, 12 hour days, 6 days a week..., hot..., wet....

What a way to spend your youth!

And..., I spent my time with some of the best people I ever knew..., and didn't even know it!!!

Kevin McQuade Sgt., USAF 412 MMS, 12 TFW, 1966 435 MMS, 35 TFW, 1966-1967
