Nostalgia

From Bob McMahan, on Sat, 20 Apr 2002 17:24:22 GMT (in response to: Calling all RMK-BRJ workers.)

I worked at RMK-BRJ from May 1966 to August 1972, in Local Personnel, Internal Audit, Danang Personnel, Records Retention (Warehoue 48, and Security. I remember a Larry Smith who drove a Volkswagen station wagon. In 1980, I was working TDY at the American Embassy in Suriname and ran into (?) Dexter who had been a lubrication foreman at the Island.

In 1990, I did a number of TDY trips to Saigon as part of the Orderly Departure Program and one Sunday, got to visit the Island. It had fallen into some disrepair but the SRV folks were building small fishing boats there. The guards would not permit us to go into the main warehouse area. Sometimes the Air France flight from Bangkok would fly over the Island on its approach to Tan Son Nhat and, viewed from the air, Warehouse 48 appeared to have been demolished. I have often wondered what the Communists would have made of that warehouse with its microfilm and photo lab.

After 23 years in the Foreign Service, I am retired, living in Falls Church, Virginia. My first wife, Nancy, was hit by a car and killed in 1993. I am remarried and have a daughter who will be four next month. The six years I spent with RMK-BRJ were a high point of my life. It would be fun to shoot the breeze with any former RMK folks.
