COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Catalogue:
-"This is
a capstone course in Communication Studies that encompasses the history,
theory and philosophy of communication while focusing on the research
literature on the field and providing students with the opportunity to
conduct original research in the area of Communication Studies."
Students are encouraged to continue their research interests from previous
courses
and to incorporate related work from COMM 2135 [Communication Research
Strategies] and COMM 3640 [Rhetorical Criticism].
However, you cannot
resubmit work from a prerequisite course in order to satisfy an
assignment in this senior seminar.

Satisfying "Proficiencies":
This is a Seton Hall University
Reading/Writing-intensive
course therefore it will include a significant amount of formal and informal writing, several
hours of academic and professional reading per week, all contributing to at
least one-third of the total course grade.

all class activities & presentation assignments are
designed to enhance the students abilities to find, analyze, and incorporate
information as well as develop their own research processes and strategies. |

COURSE GOALS:

reinforce proficiency in the tools and techniques of communication research
within the humanistic tradition
3. to provide a
structured & guided opportunity to conduct original research and present findings
using scholarly formats
4. to provide a forum for discussion and analysis of contemporary issues
in communication investigative practice

participatory , seminar-based nature of this course, it is necessary to
attend each session. In addition to the quality of the Senior Thesis
paper , Attendance, Punctuality, and Classroom Engagement all
are considered during the final tabulation of the semester grade.
Only absences which are accompanied by doctor notes, university letters, or
similar documentation will be considered "excused". Also, if you are
present in the room, but otherwise distracted or disengaged, classwork
points will be deducted. }

no electronic distractions policy for this class. This includes no-cell-phone-usage /
no-audible-pagers-or-alarms/etc.

[i.e. no IM, no email, no chat, restricted notetaking only, etc.)

This is a seminar, therefore classroom time will be primarily devoted to the clarification, exploration, and
discussion of the issues generated by the readings and students' research. In
other words, class sessions will be based on your readings and
research, but will not simply "rehash" the same exact material in a
verbatim manner. You can be better prepared for the classroom activities &
discussions if you keep up on your readings.
It
is the student's responsibility to be prepared for class by anticipating
the units and discussion assignments. NB: Some

Two in-class
tests are scheduled & thetre will be 3-4
quizzes placed in Blackboard. They will be designed to test your knowledge of
the information in the textbook as well as topics discussed in class.
Approximately one week before each major test, a study sheet will be linked
above --
summarizing the chapters to be covered. For the online quizzes, the chapters/material to
be studied will be mentioned in the announcement you will see when you log in to
"Piratenet."

This is a ten source annotated bibliography for a narrowly defined area
of communication research which pertains to your chosen research interest area.
You will also give a brief oral presentation
summarizing your findings so far. Please note this is not the same entity
also called the "Literature Review" which is an actual component within

is a one to three page document in which you present a research question/or/
hypothesis and explain your planned investigative method. Your overall research
goal is to contribute (incrementally) to the area of research presented in your literature
review.

For this course, you will be Investigating (i.e. conducting
original research), composing and presenting a
_15-20 pp.
(minimum)_scholarly paper.
At the end of the semester, you will be reporting on your findings in an oral presentation
in which you summarize how you conducted your study and what you found and the
implications for future research.

In addition to
your performance on specific assignments, you will earn a grade for general
class participation. The grading factors for
classwork & participation include evaluation of the completion of homework assignments & worksheets,
completion of online quizzes, and active contributions to classroom discussion
and exercises [including moderating chapter discussions]. All of this helps
support your course grade even if you are not a perfect writer.
