Prisons aren't supposed to be pleasant places. We get all these horrific descriptions of N. Viet Nam POW prisons (they didn't, of course, have very good funding, as compared to US).

But we never hear about how hrroendous the S. Viet Nam POW prisons were--as operated under the noses and by the US.

Perhaps we want to avoid feeling ashamed; that might tarnish the superficial "heroism" of blindly compounding error.
