Readers, allow me to correct a myth about those who protested the war in Vietnam. The ones who treated me badly when I returned from the 'nam were the ones who told me to go in the first place. How? Whenever I went back to the old fire station or to the auto parts store people NEVER asked me how I was - I doubt they even knew I had been gone. THEY SURE AS HELL WEREN'T GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE WAR. They didn't give a crap. Period. I guarantee that if you asked one of them today about the war, they would say, "We shouldn't have been there in the first place",-washing their hands of any responsibility for our involvement in Vietnam. They washed their hands, placing the blame on those of us who were sent. I realize that many on this page weren't even born at that time, but try to understand that a great majority of Americans SUPPORTED the war at one time. John Wayne and his Green Beret movie was nothing more than a remake of WWII type propaganda movies.
People who blame the protesters for us losing the war or for spitting on us once again are trying to dodge any culpability for what happened in Vietnam. Think! The 1960's were a time when America's people were finally heard. In addition to the war protestors, there were the Civil Rights protestors. The turmoil was good for this country, because it showed our leaders that the people were holding their feet to the fire-which is what they deserved.
