BIOL 1202 lab study assignments and lab guidesheets

For each week's assigned lab work you must print a copy of the appropriate lab guidesheet(s), shown as links below.  You must bring the guidesheet(s) to lab; it contains the instructions you need to do the lab work.  Note that for some weeks' assigned work, there may be more than one guidesheet to print.

For week #6 in lab (Mon. Feb 27 - Fri. Mar. 2)

1. Study the detailed guidesheet entitled "Measurement of Enzyme Activity."  Bring it to lab; it is your set of instructions. (The lab work on this enzyme will continue in the following week, #7; so keep this #6 guide sheet for use again in week #7.)
Be sure to print also both of the SETUP TABLES that the guidesheet refers to: part 1 and part 2.

2. Study the material about properties of enzymes in the textbook and in your lecture notes. Concentrate on factors that influence rates of enzyme activity, in particular the effect of substrate concentration (Michaelis -Menten plot covered in class) and the effect of enzyme concentration on the rate of reaction. (The following week's lab will look at several other factors.)

4. Since you will be using the Spectronic 20 colorimeter as a tool to track the progess of the reaction that the peroxidase enzyme catalyzes, you should review the operation of that instrument and the principles of colorimetry, which you studied and applied in your first and second lab periods.  You will need to know how to standardize the instrument.

5. Bring your calculator and some graph paper (linear-linear).  No laptops in lab, please.
