Curriculum Vita

PROFILE: Professor Kayal (B.A. Fordham University,'65; M.A. Fordham University,'66; Ph.D. Fordham University, '70) is a specialist in the sociology of the Arab (Syrian) American experience. He is also highly published in the field of the sociology of AIDS with a focus on volunteerism, especially that of the gay community. His two most recent publications are Bearing Witness: Gay Men's Health Crisis and the Politics of AIDS and The Coming of the Arabic-Speaking People to the United States by Adele Younis. Professor Kayal teaches courses in the sociology of intergroup relations, social problems, religion, education, aging, and comparative cultures.

His recently curated exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York on Arab New York has been an outstanding success, drawing  thousands of national and international visitors. Together with the museum he edited A Community of Many Worlds: Arab Americans in New York City (Syracuse University Press, 2002). In a lighter vein, his most recent publication is a cookbook, A Taste of Syria. It is now available from Hippocrene Press in NYC and can be ordered online from Amazon.com or BarnesandNobles.com
