Dog as mascot at Phan Rang

From Allen Kimble (Sgt USAF), on Wed, 02 May 2001 17:58:15 GMT (in response to: I arrived in May of 69 and I had the base mascot from May69 to March70)

I served at Phan Rang from 1970 through 71, the exact months escape me at the moment. After being briefed my units rep picked me up and drove me over to the building where I'd stayed. We called them hooch's if my memory serves me well. Upon getting out of the truck I notices a dog house and thought how odd it was to find it in the war zone. It had "Snoopy" painted on it and was the mascot for my group which was the "Communication Squadron".

My job was as a "Telephone Phone Switching Equipment" repairman. My new bosses name was Tech Sgt. Francis Tate or something like that who was from Illinois. I worked in the air conditioned building that was better known as "THE RED ROCKET".

Boy, I'm on a roll as this stuff is really coming back to me. I know war is hell but some of my most memorable times as a young man were had durning my tour of Vietnam at Phan Rang Air base. Including, being thrown into that shallow stream just behind the "Red Rocket" where we use to Barbe Q Stakes, Bake Potatoes, drink beer and have fun. Stange how war enables me to create a closeness which can not be duplicated in peace. God Bless you all.
