From Dinh thi Phuc, on Thu, 26 Sep 1996 21:54:50 GMT (in response to: Are the South Vietnamese blameless ?)
Are we, the South Vietnamese blameless? Of course not. In a war such as Viet Nam there is no clear cut good side or bad side. I fought for the Viet Cong, but I do not consider myself evil. I was just doing what I felt had to be done. It is true that among the Southerners there was not such a strong feeling of certainty about the justifications of the war. Many of us felt uneasy about fighting our countrymen, especially when we could sypathize so deeply with their desire for independance. My father firmly believed that Viet Nam could never be two nations because you cannot split up a family. There was an uneasyness about fighting for the puppets against our Vietnamese brothers and sisters. Many of us felt this way, and perhaps because of this the war became easier for the North to win. I may add, however that most Viet Cong were not Communist, we simply wanted a united Viet Nam, which the Viet Cong promised. As the war dragged on It became harder to remain commited to winning at all. The goal became simply to end the war, to have fathers, older brothers and sisters, friends, and yourself, return home. Life during the war became full of sorrow, like an overflowing cup with someone still pouring the tea, all you wanted was for them to stop, you no longer cared about actually drinking it. After the war I drank the tea, however, it tasted bitter.
