Watching Lam Son 719 from FSB Sarge

From Ralph Carlson, on Sat, 17 Aug 1996 01:21:50 GMT (in response to: Lam Son 719/ Dewey Canyon II)

Hello --
I was with the 407th Radio Research Detachment in support
of 1st Bde, 5th Mech Infantry Div in Quang Tri Province,
1970-1971.
During Lam Son 719, I was out on FSB Sarge, overlooking
the VanderGrift base area that, at other times, was vacant,
but for LS 719 was filled with US & ARVN units doing supply
and rear/supply line guard duty. Every night, at the base
of our hill, on the edge of VanderGrift's pads and bunkers,
a Duster would crank out several burst of night defensive
fire. I will always remember seeing the tracers lancing
through the dark, then hearing the individual concussions
of their firing a couple seconds behind.
As various units moved forward, our RR bunker and a quad-50
crew next door was sometimes "co-located" with ARVN 1st
Division, Ben Hai Regiment infantry companies, then a
Regional Forces Company (256th?), and later a company from
101st Abn.
Who all was trekking through the valley below along QL 9
en route to and from Khe Sanh, I don't know. We did see
some convoys taking rounds on QL 9, and one morning, a tank
was blown at the base of our hill (sometimes listed on VN
maps as Dong Toan, and a ridge or so away from Ba Ho).
Anybody else see the same playgrounds then?
   Grace & Peace,
   Ralph S. Carlson
