Searching for Why's in Vietnem

From Ryan Solchenberger, on Mon, 27 May 1996 17:13:58 GMT (in response to: The REAL REAL reason why we lost the war.)

Politics did play a large role in the Vietnem Conflict, but I doubt bureaucratic haggling caused the U.S. to withdraw from Vietnam in defeat. Historicaly, the Vietnamese people have ousted many foreign invaders from their homeland, from the initial Chinese invaders (who posited Vietnam as a country) all the way to the French imperialists of the 1800's. This history, like any nation's founding mythologies, gave direction and motivation to Vietnamese fighters. Looking only from the U.S. perspective, one can find certain reasons contributing to our loss. From the Vietnamese perspective, defeating foreign invaders is a necessary component of both their history and future. If an invading army is victorious, the independence of the Vietnamese people and the nation of Vietnam will be dissolved, which is unacceptable from their standpoint. We must look at the will of those who defeated us in order to find why we were defeated.
