James, Look for a book titled "The 10,000 Day War". It is a very good history of America's involvement in Indo China from the late 1940's. As Japan was pulling out, our Allies, the French, were hoping to reclaim their colonies. We got involved. The first U.S. casualty was a young Army officer who was working as an intelligence officer for a branch of the U.S. government that later became the C.I.A. The author of the book tries to explain our flow of decision making from those early days, through the French disaster of Dien Ben Phu, the aborted elections, and our eventual full scale military adventure. The premise of the book is that the U.S. was involved militarily and politically in Vietnam from about 1948 to April, 1975, or about 10,000 days.
