Steven House, Biology
Dr.
Steven D. House and Dr. Chang share a mutual interest in the inflammatory
process in the healthy individual and in drug addicts. She initiated
the collaboration in 1994 soon after she joined the Biology Department
in order to investigate how the use of morphine, a depressant, versus
the use of cocaine, a stimulant, affects the leukocyte-endothelial
interaction which is a critical indicator of a functional immune
system. They have co-authored four abstracts, one monograph, and
one article.

Dr.
Milan Fiala, Department of Medicine, University of California at
Los Angeles
Dr.
Milan Fiala is a new collaborator of Dr. Chang's . Dr. Fiala requested
her assistance on the determination of the expression of adhesion
molecules in endothelial cells following treatment with substances
of abuse after Dr. Chang's symposium talk in November, 1995. They
also learned that they share a common interest in exploring the
passage of HIV through the blood-brain-barrier. Recently, they invited
Dr. Moldow to join their efforts to investigate the HPA axis. Although
this collaboration is new, they have already produced results, publishing
a monograph, two abstracts, and with a manuscript in preparation.
