Communicating on the Web in Real Time

Chat is a term for software that enables many users on the Internet to communicate with each other in real time:

Whatever one users types on his or her keyboard can be seen immediatelly by all other users that are signed on.

Chat is nothing new: Internet Relay Chat has been around for a decade or more, and enjoys a huge popularity among users world-wide. However, Netscape has recently added its own version of a chat program that has made this approach particularly useful for teaching purposes.

Let's take a look at the beginning of a Chat session to see how it works. Note: you will only see a screen image, not an actual chat session.
