Fractals: The Mandelbrot Set 

The Mandelbrot set is based on the quadratic equation f(z) = z2 + c, where both z and c can be complex numbers. Using that formula and some simple mathematics, one can create the picture of the basic Mandelbrot set:

This Mandelbrot set is an example of a mathematical object called a Fractal. 

Fractals have the property that they are "self-similar", meaning that you can zoom in into parts of the picture on the left, and you will rediscover a set that looks similar to the original one.
