Statement about Teaching
A humane and equitable approach
to education demands that responsible educators prepare students for the
challenges of the 21st century. Responsive teachers transform their curriculum
and pedagogy to reflect the diversity found in today's classrooms. My curriculum
includes an array of innovative teaching techniques interwoven with established
pedagogical methods and a sense of humor. I explore attitudes, values and
beliefs; encourage shared experiences; recognize and respect differences;
experiment and exploit technology; and place the responsibility for learning on
both my students and myself. I try to plan, organize, and prepare every class I
teach and use every possible moment to model Best Practice. Most important, I am
interested in my students. I follow their progress, obtain help for them when
needed, and offer an ear to their problems. When I become aware of a problem I
don’t ignore it.
Teaching
is my favorite activity. Staying in the role of teacher is difficult at a
university because the service, research, and administrative demands increase
daily. I try to organize my activities in these areas so that they contribute to
the body of knowledge and skills I need to be an effective teacher in my
discipline. I devote my energies when I have the choice to tasks that improve
the learning environment for both students and teachers.
