TA

THE INFORMATIVE SPEECH

    [[MAJOR PRESENTATION #2 ]]--S'02

        Rationale

The aim of  Informative Speaking  [also known as Expository Speaking]  is  to enlighten the listeners about material /or/ a topic that they don't already know. This data should be New, Valuable {i.e. relevant} , and  Interesting to their  basic needs . See your text for details, and remember these  basic Informative  techniques:

                       > building new knowledge onto the foundation of what your audience already knows.

                       > accomplish your explaining / defining / demonstrating with a variety of supports.

                            (Ex: Testimony + Examples + Details  +Visual/Presentation  aids + etc. )

        Preparation
  1. Carefully read the text's comments on the PRINCIPLES & the SUPPORTING  MATERIALS used for basic Informative Speaking. [Chap 17]
  2. Review your topic choice: [ if you don't have one yet, consider something that has  already come up in class as a general area-of-interest ] Be sure the topic is appropriate in all 3 ways {speaker / audience / context-occasion}. Also, make sure it is "limited" & "well focused."
3. Prepare for your speech EXTEMPORANEOUSLY [see Chap 16 - esp. p 385].   This  also means you should avoid writing out the planned speech in word-for-word sentences. For additional organizational & preparation guidelines, see Chapters 14,15 & 16
[[ tentative additional classroom handout: "Speech Planner" ]]
4. Refer to your English composition text as well as to the sample speech
outline in our text in order to be sure that your submitted
extemporaneous outline is correct in both
form and content.  [e.g. see the sample speech  outline on pp. 356-7]
