"...my
leadership compared to theirs"
MAJOR PRESENTATION #3 {"The Combo"}
PRESENTATION RATIONALE:
The
purposes of this presentation are: <1> to combine both the extemporaneous and
manuscript methods of speech delivery, and
<2> for you to use the Comparison/Contrast approach
in message structure/organization .
PRESENTATION FORMAT & SPECIFICATIONS:
>This format is a combination {i.e.
"combo"}
of the 2 delivery styles we have used so far. The major portion
of your presentation will be Extemporaneous
(delivered from notes) AND
the other part will consist of you reading a
manuscript-style , written excerpt /or/ block quote that
coordinates with your presentation's goal,
objective and topic.
> Evaluators will not be
using a specific rating sheet this time. Instead, they should write down their
own, well phrased
comments (at least 4) on a sheet of paper.
PRESENTATION PREPARATION STEPS:
1.
In
terms of topic, this will be the most abstract presentation done so far, so you have a
special challenge to make the supporting materials within your
presentation as concrete as possible. --The basic
General Topic of these presentations is
"My
own experiences with Leadership AS COMPARED TO contemporary or classic
Leadership principles" .
In
other words, your speech's basic goal is to compare/contrast 2 different perspectives on
the same selected principle. [ANY leadership concept that you select.]
Your general
speech purpose can be:" to inform",
"to inspire", or "to express an opinion"--but you cannot yet be
overtly persuasive. |
2. Prepare a "short"
extemporaneous speech on a
leadership concept/principle that interests you & can be considered of from at
least 2 credible perspectives: the experiential
(i.e. using your experience)
and the theoretical
(i.e.
using your researched information). |
3.
Find your complementary written excerpt(s) from essays, articles, or literature
selections. You are looking for a piece of writing that represents at least one of the perspectives being discussed
, and therefore, complements
your overall message. Insert the excerpt(s) meaningfully and
strategically, somewhere within the prepared, extemporaneous speech. your overall message. Insert the excerpt(s) meaningfully and
strategically, somewhere within the prepared, extemporaneous speech. |
4.
Make sure the entire presentation is well coordinated, interesting and lasts
4 - 5
minutes. TOTAL. Any "just-before" set-up of presentation
aids should take no longer than 30 seconds. {NOTE: I will not be giving time signals during this presentation, but, as always, timing is factored into the presentation's grade. You may want to ask a classmate to give you time signals} |
PRESENTATION GRADING:
You will be graded on:
<a> your skillfulness with these two methods of delivery : extemporaneous + manuscript
<b> the logical development of the BODY portion of your message
[clearly using a specific order-of-organization - refer to pp. 322-324]
