In each case, do not leave the text behind too quickly.  (One page total.) Discuss summaries and discuss the ideas in Fraker.
Day 21

Mid-term self-assessment.  Read Sanders essay (handout) and annotate margins (1) to label the parts of the essay, (2) to raise questions about something you don't understand or wish you could ask the author, and (3) explain to the author why you disagree with him. In discussion, identify what Sanders' confusion is and what his hopes are.  Discuss what it's like to annotate something you read.
Day 22

Read Wolfe in Speculations (354).  Read the first time just to understand what bugs Wolfe and what her main argument is.  Read a second time to pick out the main parts of her argument.  Annotate the margin.  Summarize her argument first; then write a response to it. Talk about how to approach an essay that is difficult to read.

Full-class and small-group work responding to thinkpiece.
