Yanks in the woods

From B.K. Powell, on Mon, 29 Jul 2002 21:45:48 GMT (in response to: I was on top of Nui Dat with the 518th all of 1967)

I was one of the handfull of "Yanks" based at Nui-Dat in 1968. I was with the US 53rd Signal Bn and our camp was located in the woods just off the kangaroo pad. I made a couple of treks up to the top of the "Dat" I did enjoy a fine meal up there one day-along with some of your splendid "beer" although warm it was good never the less. The one thing I do remember is the "food" or as you guys called it "tucker" Bad very bad!!! I can see why you had a better beer ration than we did (in our camps) Had to get the food down somehow!! Enjoyed a few runs into Vung Tau for a little R&R at one of the fine "steam and creams" located there!! and a burger on the beach! Also made a few trips into Baria-got caught in the fighting there at TET-not so good..Anyway, I enjoyed all my Aussie mates-great bunch and I'm proud to say that I served with them!! after all we're all cousins! Take care BK Powell USA 53rd Signal Bn Nui-Dat 67-68
