Protest

If you're going to bother to respond, Joe, make it worth reading!

From Steve, on Tue, 31 Oct 2000 02:43:17 GMT (in response to: Dear "Son")

Joe, I have to take issue with your response. This type of bitter tirade does nothing to further your ideas and does a disservice to you.

Telling me that my father was "feeding me illusions" is insulting to his honesty and my judgement, but it really does not make any sort of point. If you are going to make an argument, make one. Don't just hurl insults.

As for my lecturing you about what it was like, including my "revisionist fantasies," you may recall that I said that the war was wrong. Do you disagree? Your use of big words does not hide from me the fact that you again have no point.

You do make a point about "no honor" in participating in the Vietnam war, but it falls short in two ways. First of all, your comparison of American soldiers in Vietnam to the Nazis is clearly just another insult, because it is certainly not a historically defensible point. And you accuse me of revisionism?! Secondly, are you insinuating that all of the soldiers who served in this unjust war did so for unjust reasons? That kind of unreasonable generalization is great for a sound bite, but it simply does not make sense.

Bringing my father back for one more insult, along with the always reliable "I was there" line, is not a convincing way to end, although I will admit that it has some emotional appeal. Once again, though, I have to bring to your attention the fact that, despite your rhetoric, you've actually said very little.

If you want to make a statement about Vietnam, come up with some material. I've heard the rhetoric on both sides, and I find all of it to be unconvincing. Yours is no different. If you're going to hurl insults and make senseless statements, save them for someone with more spare time.
