From Patti, on Thu, 29 Nov 2001 06:54:00 GMT (in response to: Don't believe everything you read, Trisha)
I'm assuming, Danny, that you know for a fact that what has been said about Ms. Fonda is false, because you were there, right? All of those POWs lied, just like Ms. Fonda accused them of doing. And she only coincidentally apologized to the New England Vets when she just happened to be shooting a movie up there. What I don't understand is the condescending tone that your response takes on to Trish. Are you assuming because she is horrified that she is a weak and feeble girl who would believe dribble that was written, who would swoon at the mere thought of a person that Hollywood has glorified actually committed all of the things that she might be accused of? Why should Trish believe you? How do you know that Trish is not a 30-year-old woman with a degree in business admin.? You have not offered any valid proof except for your opinion. I tend to believe eyewitness account over opinion. Next I might hear from you that the government made up the moon landing.
I'm a skeptical person when it comes to the internet. I research things and find corroborating evidence (ask me about those Nostradamus Hoaxes that appeared after 9/11/01...I read my Nostradamus) before I form an opinion, because, yes, not everything you read on the internet can be trusted. Actually, most of what you read on the internet SHOULD not be trusted. But I have read several sources accounting Ms. Fonda's involvement.
What I would also like to know is, how do you know that she has not been investigated? How do you know that the Feds don't have a file on Ms. Fonda? She comes from a very influential family. It is not uncommon for influential families to get preferential treatment. It's not fair, but it happens. This is a democracy, not communism - all people are created equal, not necessarily treated equal. If we were to all be treated equal, then I would like my share of welfare and I would like my share of Social Security. If all people in the country should be treated equal, then we wouldn't have these programs.
Should we be violent to Ms. Fonda? No. Should we wish her harm? No. Should we continue to support her films and her livelihood when her actions have been the downfall of POWs? NO! The almighty American dollar is called that for this reason. Where Americans put their money, is where the higher-ups follow; Joe Blow on the street has more power controlling where the country goes. Why else would politicians worry about opinion polls? If we are disgusted by Ms. Fonda's actions, boycott her, even if you do it for your own sake. As Americans we allow people the right to free speech, even if we don't like what they are saying. But we don't have to support what they say or how they make their living. If you don't like support abortion, you aren't going to go out and join N.O.W. and support their cause.
The intelligent and responsible thing to do is find out as much as you can before you believe in what is being said. And then, ask you mother. :) J/K Make up your own mind.
Danny, if you want to believe that Hanoi Jane has been falsely accused, please, keep on doing so. I'm not going to try and stop you. But I reserve the right to be pissed off if you try and tell me or any one else that our opinion is wrong because you said so. And you did, in so many words, tell Trish that she is wrong. The case I see here is that Trish made up her mind, now the burden of proof is upon you to prove to her with HARD evidence that she should change her mind. Not the other way around.
