What threat was N. Vietnam

Please don't flame me since I really have a question and I'm hoping for an intelligent, well-thought out response.

You mention that the U.S. was involved in Vietnam to protect Americans. What threat was N. Vietam to the U.S.? Obviously the N. Vietnamese were not going to attack/invade the U.S. So what was the threat?
