You cannot honestly say that we Hmong did not do our share of helping. It is true that the Americans could have sat back ignore the war. The Americans could have done nothing and Vietnam would have become communist. Fortunatly the America's believed in helping the less fortunate.. In your message you are stating that the reason we lost was because we gave up... because we were weak... because we wanted someone else to fight the war for us... You are talking about a group of people who have always took the bad part of things because we didn't want confortation. We value our families and did not want to lose them to a war in which we know we will lose. For centuries have migrated from places to places only to be be threaten by some other group. Finally up in the mountains the worst of all places to live and survive we began a life of hardship. We Hmongs farmed all year long and when winter comes, it is the only time we are able to relax. Then it is time to slash and burn the mountains again and farm. No one bothered us because we were in the most unpleasent place to be. The Laotions would say we were the dumbest people living in a place where it had so much hardship. But all we Hmong wanted was a place to call home. Keep in mind that the Hmong population is few compare to others... Then the Vietnam war started. Since the Hmong were so familiar with the mountains, the American asked for their help. When the Americans pulled out, all Hmongs were branded as traitors. We were captured, tortured, and killed. Many families lived in caves, running from the Communist hoping that the Americans would return and help. My family lived for three years running. Without food, water, or shelter. Too afraid that they are going to die. Finally, giving up on the Americans they crossed the Mekong River to Thailand. From there after a long wait, they finally are able to come to the United States. Like I said before in my other thread, I am greatful for the Americans, we are forever in their debt, and without them I would not be able to be where I am today. True with the first message, it is hard to grow up in the US. Not because the AMericans are bad, it is just hard to adjust like all migrated groups. You have both your cultures clash and it is had to overcome obstacles. WE HMONGS DID NOT JUST GIVE UP BECAUSE WE WERE WEAK/ SELFISH/ OR LAZY. IT WAS BETTER TO SURRENDER THAN TO HAVE EVERYONE DIE OFF. WE WERE FIGHTING A WAR IN WHICH IT WAS 100 TO 1. WITH ODDS LIKE THAT WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO KEEP ON FIGHTING. WE DID OUR SHARE AND DID NOT JUST QUIT. TRUE THAT AMERICANS DID DIE FOR OUR FREEDOM, BUT WE GAVE UP A LOT FOR OUR FREEDOM TOO. WE GAVE UP ON HOME, OUR BROTHERS, OUR FATHERS, AND OUR ACCUSTOM LIFESTYLE. We are greatful that the Americans helped us, but bashing us that we are lazy is wrong. We are actually smarter than you think. We Hmong believed that a war does not solve everything. And when we start to live in a world everyone believes this and lives by this creed, then that is when the peace and harmony that everyone is trying to reach will begin to become a reality...
