Steve, I am a seventeen year-old high school Junior and have recently been studying the Vietnam War. I think it is a sad thing that Americans have such a lack of respect for the Vietnam War veterans. I truly believe the Vietnam War was a "war that could not be won," but the soldiers who traveled to Vietnam laid down their lives for their country, unselfish acts much in contrast to the selfishness of the draft evaders that fled to Canada. I feel deep compassion for the veterans who lost loved ones and still today wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night from war memories. In an era of protests and upheavals, the Americans back home turned on and shunned their fellow brothers and sisters. These dedicated soldiers had no say in the war; they were just serving the duties of their country. Although there were some exceptions to the honorable soldiers, such as Cally, no individual can shed judgement on the soldiers of war because a person can never portend his or her own actions without being faced with the predicament themselves. Secondly, God will grant the judgement needed on the individual's Judgement Day. So I guess what I am asking, Steve, is that you and others with the same viewpoint as yourself show a little more compassion, understanding, and respect to the Vietnam War veterans. Thank you.
