Tears of Loyality

From Kendall A. Smith, on Mon, 25 May 1998 12:33:53 GMT (in response to: Vietnam Veterans are Heroes)

The words do not exist to discribe the sorrow and pain I feel when I see an American Flag blowing in the wind on a clear blue sky day. It reminds me of the peacefulness that I knew and saw near a small village in Vietnam during my tour of duty. Knowledge that we, the United States Army, were defending freedom in a remote and far away land, could be lost or destroyed is the hardest thing for me to understand. When we left Vietnam, the Khamir Rouge murdered over three million Cambodians in the killing fields. No one ever talks about this terrible aspect of the war. If we did not leave Vietnam and decided to protect those people, we would not have had to witness that terrible crime. We would not have given up, no matter what. We would not have let them kill all those people. We would have fought till the death for freedom. The war was not a senseless act. It was an act of courage from brave men and women all over this country. The history books will tell you that we never should have gone to Vietnam. Tell that to the women and children of Cambodia.

I want to personally thank you for your kind words about the Vietnam Veterans. The real heros in that war were the children of Southeast Asia. They sacrificed their youth and their lives. The sad truth is that the American people were not willing to sacrifice their youth for the sake of humanity when the time for sacrifice was the greatest.
