From Purple Heart, on Fri, 23 Jan 1998 17:24:15 GMT (in response to: Peace is Unimposable)
Everlasting world peace is possible. It can be attained by focusing on the real reasons for wars: (1) poverty; (2) hunger; (3) disease; (4) over-population.
Polio has been wiped out in the US. But more than 50,000 Asian children are stricken with polio each year - needlessly. (100,000 children are polio victims worldwide every year).
Instead of us dropping napalm on the V/C; and the V/C planting land mines to kill our men - it would have been better for ALL the Viets if both sides had put down their weapons and worked - TOGETHER - on the REAL problems.
We could have provided the vaccines to innoculate the Viets against the many diseases that destroy their people - the V/C could act as guides to lead the American medics to each village.
A million dollars spend on bombs is money better spent on food and health care. When all are better fed and enjoy better health, it's a better world for all of us.
Both during - and after - the War, I have donated to organizations which practice non-violence and promote peace with food, medicine, and religion.
