Applause for Ky Anh

From Dinh Thi Phuc, on Sun, 03 Nov 1996 18:50:39 GMT (in response to: YOU DIDN'T LOSE THE WAR. TRUST ME.)

Ky Anh has hit the nail on the head. Vietnam was indeed a battle of wills. I have heard Americans talk about the war, saying the U.S. could have won if they had allowed the generals to do what they wanted, or nuked them, or a thousand other things, but the fact of the matter remains that even if the United States had managed to win, the conflict would not have been resolved. The Vietnamese desire for freedom was too great for us to allow our country to be ruled by foreigners. The will of the RVA was, for the most part, weak. I was a VC and I believe that many more South Vietnamese were sympathetic to us than let on. Many people, in fact, had family members on both sides. It has been my experience that many people joined the RVA out of fear than anything else, sometimes to cover up underlying VC sympathies. If a people truly desire and hunger for what they are fighting for then they will not rest until they get it.
