Dear Americans I looked this site over, and still can't decide on whether or not your responses are justified. The sense of hysteria is pretty powerful whenever the Vietnam War is brought up, and I still struggle to grasp why this conflict is so deeply entrenched in the American psyche. Perhaps its because it was the first war that was turned into a "media event", death broadcast directly into your homes for the first time. Perhaps it is that American vision of invincibility, firmly trounced by the Viet Cong, the mighty US Army beaten by a guerilla army of peasants. Perhaps its because of a national guilt on behalf of those that evaded the draft, not even excluding your very own President Bill Clinton. I believe it is time for Americans to reasses their past. The prevalant "we won in Vietnam, even though we had to make some concessions" mentality must be firmly erased. It is time for Americans to face up to the fact that they LOST, and lost badly. Americans must realise that they had made a mistake, and instead of thinking in terms of being the saviours of the "Free World", and continue to make costly mistakes such as Vietnam and Somalia, must contend themselves with dealing with their own domestic problems.
