I don't think we lost.

The most truthful sounding explanation as to why we pulled out and the end of the war was in the epilogue to Recondo by Larry Chambers. In it he says about leaving "....it's like leaving a party early and having neighbor say you were thrown out." Read the whole epilogue. I could not have said it better.
