Acceptance and moving foward.

From Dinh Thi Phuc, on Mon, 14 Jul 1997 22:19:07 GMT (in response to: As time goes...)

I would like to say that I think you have said a right thing here. So many people of all sides are only interested in blaming others, and defending their "Side". But since there is no more war in Vietnam, there are no more "sides". What good does it do to call names and accuse? Thosewho did terrible things know who they are. It is our duty as survivors to tell our story as truthfully as we can, and make sure that what we say about our experience is based on our own knowledge of the situation. We must make sure that the war, and ALL peoples who fought in it are remembered as they were. If they were bad people, we should not obscure that fact by calling them heroes. Likewise, we should not condemn those who truly are heroes by calling them murderers. In a war, bad things happen. This cannot avoid. When there is no more bad things, then also there is no more war. When a soldier goes to war he knows he will kill other beings. It is the most terrible thing to think about, these people, knowing that they WILL kill other humans, and this will not make them murderers, but soldiers. Soldiers kill. Murderers kill. Where is the difference? It is hard to make ot sometimes, and we don't always want to see it. Maybe it isn't even there. Still, this killing, it is the way of war. The nature of war. If you don't want killing, then you must eliminate the war, otherwise, there is no way. Who it is does not matter. I have killed. That is what a soldier does. Americans killed too. It was a fucking war.
