The whole point in intervening in the Vietnam war was to preserve our western ways of life and to prevent the spread of communism - yes? The only problem with this is that Vietnamese never had western ways of life, and communism reigns. Basically it was one of the all time biggest blunders. Go to a country with a completely alien culture and fight to preserve something that was never there to be preserved. We went one step too far and got lost in our own confused desire to save the world from itself. Vietnam represents to me the blind confusion that comes with the queston- what are we fighting for? The Vietnam war was a political nightmare, a moral horror story and the bad dream of a generation that gained nothing.
