Creating a Web Site: Intro

Background Information

Here is some essential background information. Everyone interested in setting up a web site should check out the information offered in these pages.

Web Server Software:
Brief overview of Web Servers, particularly of NCSA, CERN, and Netscape httpd server software. There is an older report on performance issues available.
Introduction to Unix:
Basic operating system commands, files manipulation, and Pico text editor For email, we use Pine email software.
HTML basics:
HTML level 2, as well as background images, tables, etc

Projects:

Here are the first projects. Preliminary reports are due on the second meeting; final reports are due on the third meeting. All final reports are to be turned in to me as well as to the accountant group.

Web Masters:
Install the NCSA server software. Write a report on all parameters and directories chosen, and on all problems encountered (and their solutions)
Developers:
Report on the three search engines: SF-Gate + freeWAIS-sf, Exite, and/or Harvest
Designers:
Collect and/or design buttons, rulers, colored dots; create a Logo and suggest animated logo. Report on layout of the homepage and of common features for every page
Accountants:
Report on cost of Unix machines, average salary of Unix systems programmer, cost for internet connections at various speeds, outsourcing for graphic designer.
Everyone:
Create a homepage for yourself. Include a brief description of yourself, a picture (250 x 250), and a list of your favorite links as a separate document
Bring a small picture of yourself
Add your user's home directory to the httpd server so that you can access it either by providing a URL including ~/username or by providing a URL including /first.lastname/
