Portfolio Content for PSYC 3311: Experimental Psychology

The research process is complex.  No one could possibly learn it in just one course – it is a skill that is learned gradually after a lot of hard work.  That is the way it is.  The Experimental Psychology course will provide you with an overview of the research process and it will get you started.  It is up to you to continue your learning beyond this course. The Experimental Psychology Course Portfolio will help you organize your work from this class and hopefully you will use it and build upon it as you continue through your bachelor and graduate degree programs.

If you have not done so already, go to the “Using Microsoft Office to Create an Electronic Course Portfolio” to read about the overall structure of the “Course Portfolio”.

The Index Page of a course portfolio lists the main content (artifacts) of the portfolio.  In this course the Index will be different from the usual.  You will recreate the flow chart of the research process that is in the assigned  textbook on a single page in Microsoft Word. This flow chart will serve as your Index.  As we progress through the course you will learn about each step of the research process.  You will create individual documents for each step. These documents will contain your personalized notes and you will add a hyperlink to these documents on the Index page.

To Create the Index Page in Word you will do the following:

  1. Create a Table with 5 columns and 16 rows.
  2. Decrease the width of Column 2 and 4
  3. Add text to the appropriate cells; use the flowchart in the textbook for the content and the image below for the overall structure.
  4. “Hide” the cell borders in the table so that they are dim on the computer screen (and will be omitted when the document is printed).
  5. Use the Drawing Toolbar in Word to add the lines and arrows.
  6. Include the reference for the source of the Flow Chart at the bottom of the page
  7. Add hyperlinks as you create the various artifacts (notes).

You will need to attend class regularly to find out what material you should add to your course portfolio.
