►►►Presentation guidelines & timing

    In addition to submitting your written thesis/paper to the Professor, each individual will receive 7-8  minutes to present his/her findings to the class.  a brief Q & A will follow.  This is comparable to researchers’ presentations  made at conferences to fellow scholars.  Presentation content areas should include these 6 items listed below: [use explicit MAIN TOPIC HEADINGS  & TRANSITIONS in your oral structure to denote each of these 6 sections below in your presentation]

  1- An explanation of where your current project falls within the larger Body-of-

       Knowledge

 

  2- The details and the rationale underlying your (i.e. the investigator's) choices of

       method, measurement, and how closely the actual investigation procedures

       corresponded to the original design plan -including the rationale for any changes made, as

          applicable.

        

  3- A specific, but succinct, summary of how the research was carried out. [e.g. where,

         with whom, how, instruments used, coding used, what aspects of what underlying theories]

 

  4- A discussion of what (if any) special investigative "challenges" and/or limitations

       were encountered & whether or not they affected the study's outcomes. 

 

  5- Your specific "Findings" = a summary of what your research revealed.  [e.g. Was your

          hypothesis proved/disproved  /or/  what is the evident answer to your research question. ]

 

  6- Your "Conclusions" = an analysis of the significance & or implications of your

       findings  [e.g.  insights into communication and/or communication behaviors /or/  possible directions for future research in

            Communication fields  /or/  suggestions for changes in policies & procedures] 

   

        

    

*All presentations should make use of effective Oral Presentation technique [as you learned in COST1600]. This means you should be focused, prepared, audience-centered,  rehearsed, professional,  & extemporaneous.

*Since these presentations are 100% virtual – using  Microsoft TEAMS, it is possible to show a share a slide show or a PDF or even to “share your screen”. You even can show a videoclip by enabling system audio &  then playing/sharing your screen. Anticipate the extra few seconds it takes to go through the steps. Always have whatever you intend to share already pulled up on your computer prior to your presentation.  However, a simple, non-visually aided  presentation is fine as well.  Please ensure your mic & your camera are enabled.

You are a DESIGNATED QUESTIONER for today’s presentation(s)

You should use FOCUSED & CRITICAL/ANALYTICAL LISTENING in order to frame your question to the presenter(s).

 

Definitions:

 

 FOCUSED Listening = active listening behaviors with a particular goal in mind.

                                   Your goal today is to listen in order to assess & evaluate

                                   the quality of the presenter’s content.

 

 CRITICAL Listening = listening to the quality of the speaker’s reasons &

                                     reasoning  [e.g. How clear are the claims/positions? 

       How concrete are the supports for the positions? How “logical” are the conclusions;

       are they grounded in the findings/results or are they derived from the presenter’s

       opinions , etc]

 

 

Throughout the presentation, listen to the quality of the speaker’s data / reasoning-&-warranting / argumentation. Listen for use of effective argumentation techniques  ( e.g. clear ties to the supports [“whereas”], concrete source citations, clarifications of specialized concepts, etc.). Also note any ineffective techniques ( e.g. generalizations, too many hypotheticals, unsupported assertions, etc.)

 

After the specified presentation, you will get to ask at least one question. Designations will be assigned just before each presentation (or, sometimes, during the presentation via the "chat")
