ALL ABOUT "THE FINAL" <LS>

WHAT: SESSION WILL INCLUDE TWO parts:

part1 = an Impromptu Speech [worth up to 40 pts] click or scroll down to go directly to speech's details

part2 = a Written Test [worth up to 60 pts] click or scroll down to go directly to test's details

The two scores will be added together to constitute your grade for your "Final". Refer to the course syllabus to verify how much weight "The Final" has on your semester grade.

THE WRITTEN TEST

This part of the Final will be done SECOND. (i.e. It takes up the last 50-70 minutes of the session)

-- Test Format will be:

in the classroom
two options: done via paper(I'll supply) & pen /OR/ you can answer the questions on your laptops & e-mail them to me before you leave the room
consisting primarily of "Short" Answer-type questions (1-2 sentences )
there may also be multiple choice, definitions &/or brief essay-type questions (i.e. one paragraph long answers)
As always, be prepared to answer the questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS -- not simply repeating/memorizing the text's words.
In addition, your answers will need to be concrete & specific

approx. 40-50 minutes [to be done AFTER completion of the Impromptu Speeches]

[ NB: For many of these units, we went beyond the information in the text [as indicated below by "+"]; therefore, in order to prepare for this test, in addition to reviewing the textbook, you should also refer to your notes , the slide shows in Blackboard, & the assignment sheets for the various experiential learning activities that you accomplished in the second half of the semester ( e.g. the group projects & the NV experiments & the paraphrasing activities & the Gallery of Ads )]

Persuasive Speaking (including Chap 17 +)
Group Communication (including Chap 9/10 +)
Interpersonal Communication & Interactive Listening (including Chaps 6,7,8 +)

Nonverbal Communication (including Chap 5 +)
Selected terms/concepts from throughout the course (e.g. basic speech organization formulas, , extemporaneous delivery, perception, the orders-of-organization, vocal interferences, indexing generalizations, source citations, types of listening contexts, worst listening habits etc, etc.)

You can expect at least one question per subject area

The Impromptu Speech

This part of THE FINAL will be done first ( It usually takes a total of approximately 30-40 minutes)

Each speaker will receive a topic (from a short list of possible choices) + some brief directions & then will have approximately 1--2 minutes to mentally prepare an Impromptu speech. [In advance, you will want to look up explanations of "Impromptu Speaking" in your textbook/MindTap]

Despite the shortness of the preparation time, the speech should exhibit all of the characteristics of effective Oral Communication [both in terms of speech construction & oral delivery].

The length of the speech should be 1-3 minutes.

Depending upon its quality, the Impromptu Speech will earn anywhere from 0 - 40 points. Points awarded based on quality demonstrated in such items as: vocal and physical poise / following the basic 3 part, speech "formula" [Intro/Body/Conc] / use of a variety of supporting materials / rapport / insights on topic / personal innovations / degree of personal improvement--since beginning of semester
