WHAT: an Impromptu Speech
[worth up to 40
pts] +
a Written Test [worth
up to 60 pts]
The
two scores will be added to constitute your grade for the component of your semester grade known as
the "Final". See the course syllabus to verify how much
weight "The Final" has on your
semester grade. |
THE WRITTEN
TEST
--Format will be:
- in the classroom
- done via paper( I'll supply) & pen
/OR/ you can answer the
questions on your laptops & e-mail them to me before you leave the room
- consisting primarily of multiple choice and "Short" Answer-type questions (1-2
sentences )
- there may also be definitions &/or brief essay-type questions (1
paragraph )
- Be prepared to answer the questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS -- not be
repeating/memorizing the text's words.
- Nevertheless, be sure your answers are concrete &
specific

- approx. 40 minutes [to be done AFTER
completion of the Impromptu Speeches]
- approx. 10-12 objective-type & 4-5
Short-Answer/Definition questions
--Test Content will be:
[ NB: For many of these units, we went beyond the information in the
text, so in order to prepare for this test, you will also need to refer to your notes, the slide shows in
Learning Space, & the assignment sheets for the various experiential learning
activities that you accomplished in the
second half of the semester ( e.g. the group projects
& the NV experiments & the paraphrasing observations]

- Group Communication ( including Chap 10 +)
- Interpersonal Communication( including Chaps 5,7,8
+ slide show)
- Listening ( including Chap 6 + slide
show)
- Selected terms from throughout the course (
e.g. context, encoding, paralanguage, vocal interferences, basic speech
organization & orders of organization,
extemporaneous speech construction formulas, rapport, etc,
etc.)
The Impromptu Speech
- Each speaker will receive a topic (from a short
list of possible choices) & some brief directions &
then will have approximately 2-3 minutes to prepare an Impromptu speech
- Despite the shortness of the preparation time, the speech
should exhibit all of the characteristics of effective Oral
Communication [both in terms of speech construction & oral
delivery].
- The length of the speech should be 1-3 minutes.
- Depending upon its quality, the Impromptu Speech will
earn anywhere from 0 - 40 points.
