Our next area of focus on group processes will be on how groups deliberate in order to make decisions (selecting among a set of options). In preparation for your demonstration of decision making in our 2nd round of presentations, see your assigned "areas-of-expertise" below.

AA - Fall '08

 

For the next several class sessions, be prepared for  these assignments. Although the pairings may be familiar, this time you do not have to coordinate material with your partner ahead of time[# indicates you are assigned twice]

 

   1 -

Read & be familiar with the details in the distributed  abbreviated Case Study+Argumentation Plan  {A Father, a Daughter, a Kidney}

    2 -

Read  & be familiar with the background information in the text:

        - PARTICIPATION theories & roles in Chapter 2 [esp. pp 54 - 57]

        - DECISION MAKING VS PROBLEM SOLVING in Chapter 9 [esp. pp.233-241]

        - ARGUMENTATION in Chapter 10

    3 -  Be prepared to be an "on call authority" (i.e. the go-to person) about your specified item listed  below [if called upon, it you'll be expected to give a clear 1-2 minute mini-explanation]
 

<a>  MIKE P_  &   MIKE (Micael) K_: Explain the difference between DECISION MAKING and Problem Solving by relating an actual , recent example of DECISION MAKING in your own life. Be  sure it was DECISION MAKING and not Problem Solving.

 

<b>_CAMELA _ & _M J  __: Explain 1 advantage to making decisions via a group (rather than by an  individual). Cite at least one contemporary, "real world" instance.

 

<c> _MARTA   & _BRIAN _: Explain 1 possible disadvantage to making decisions via a group (rather than by an  individual). Cite at least one contemporary, "real world " instance.
