CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
v.4a
(@film clip analysis-NGT -+  (sub)teams +  extemporaneous panel presentations)

W.I.G. 5/6e

LAST UPDATED 4/21/15

 Rationale:
Conflict  is  Good!

In other words: (Interpersonal) Conflict in groups is inevitable but if managed appropriately, it actually can lead to better decisions/solutions and  better interpersonal relations. This improvement occurs because the conflict forces the groups members  to acknowledge what isn't working -- on whatever level [ideological / procedural / ego-based[affective]  .

Every person tends to display his/her own individual style of dealing with conflict ( remember the "dual concerns/Blake Mouton grid').   However, on the group level there are other, broader CM approaches that help the group as-a-whole to  manage the various types of complex conflict found in group interaction.

This workshop activity will give you an opportunity to view some moments of group conflict & group conflict management  and  then match what you see with the principles &  techniques covered in your text & the online slideshows.

Procedure: step 1 /  View  the designated film clips.  If possible, get a head start by viewing on your own,  in advance.   The full 12 Angry Men is available on YouTube; specifications for the specific scene are listed below.  Some Kind of Monster - disc 1 may be harder to find online.  Some viewing  will also be done in class. )

step 2 /
Most of your preparation will be done on your own. However, with your team mates [ see special groupings below] , you will have an in-class opportunity to briefly review what you have seen by comparing & matching it to the items you have read  on conflict and conflict management:
             > Chapter 8 [6e]   (Chapter 9-5e)
             > 2 Conflict Resolution slide shows
                     - in class & Blackboard: Approaches to Group Conflict  & Management
                     - in class &  Blackboard: Integrative Conflict Resolution skills
[self reflection , seeing the other persons perspective, using refocusing questions , paraphrasing , reciprocity]
(Portions from both SldeShws to be viewed in class. View the rest on your own via Blackboard.)
>

step 3  END PRODUCT: 10 minute panel discussion in front of the class. Each panel will discuss a particular aspect of ConflictManagement.   cs[ see topics below]
This semester, all of these presentations will occur on  Mon 5/4.

*RECOMMENDED FORMAT: All panelists should be prepared to contribute, but the actual discussion will be spontaneously moderated by the Professor.

Groupings/Assignments:  team in-class review sessions = 4/29/15,  (4/27/15 - on your own / after test),
 mini- panel  presentations =   5/4/15

  special teams #1 [CONSTR/DESTR]

    Will + Matt S    //    Rene + Kelly + Dylan

Topic : It’s often easy to see when conflict is destructive. Using specific explanations from your readings & examples from  your movie clip (12 Angry / S.K.O.M),  point  out 1-2 instances where conflict can be CONstructive.
   [including  fig. 8.2-p.176-6e // Table 9.1, p.215=5e /

special teams #2 [STYLES]
  Mike H. + Anna + Stephen     //    Austin + Matt Z. + Abby

Topic:  Different people employ different styles  managing conflict. Those styles often match with personalities—but not necessarily.  Also, effective interpersonal communicators learn how to change their styles when appropriate.  Referring to the Styles Grid  (versions  located in the textbook & in one  slide show) and your other  readings, cite several CM styles observable  in your  movie clip (12 Angry / S.K.O.M).

 [including pp. 176-179-6e // via  pp. 216-219=5e

  special team #3 [STRATEGIES]
    Bernice + Chris+ Sunny     //   Jennifer + Mark + Mike C

Topic :  Based on your readings & the interpersonal dynamics evident in your movie clip(12 Angry / S.K.O.M) , which CM strategy would you recommend for  managing the conflict in this group? Our emphasis on the 3 strategies mentioned  in the textbook but you also can refer to the slide shows).  Also do you think that if the group had used  better cohesion techniques to begin with, the conflict would not have escalated?

 Strategy/Methods ( including ICR slide show &/or  pp. 181-184= 6e  //  pp. 220-224= 5e   & Cohesion  (including pp. 186-189-6e  // pp. 225-226 =5e
