CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
v.4
(film clip analysis + special (sub)teams +  mini-presentations)

W.I.G.4/5e

LAST UPDATED 4/1/13

 Rationale:
Conflict  is  Good!

In other words: Conflict in groups is inevitable but if managed appropriately, it actually can lead to better decisions/solutions and  better interpersonal relations. This occurs because the conflict forces the groups members  to acknowledge what isn't working -- on whatever level [ideological / procedural / ego-based[affective]  .

Every person tends to display his/her own individual style of dealing with conflict ( remember the "grid') . However, on the group level there are other, broader approaches that help the group to do what is best for it as a whole for managing the various types of conflict .

This workshop activity will give you an opportunity to view some moments of group conflict & group conflict management - in action and  then match what you see with the principles &  techniques covered in your text & the online slideshow .

Procedure: step 1 /  View film clips depicting interpersonal conflict within an ongoing group  (done in class & on your own if you can find them online, etc)

step 2 /
With your mini-team mates [ see groupings below] , analyze what you have seen by comparing & matching it to the material on conflict and conflict management from:
             > Chapter 9 [5e]   (Chapter 7-4e)
             > the Conflict Resolution slide shows
                     - in class: Approaches to Conflict Management
                     - in Blackboard: Integrative Conflict Resolution skills
[self reflection , seeing the other persons perspective, using refocusing questions , paraphrasing , reciprocity]
(Portions from both SldeShws to be viewed in class. View the rest on your own via Blackboard.)
>
step 3 As a mini-team, present  your insights & findings to the rest of the class in a  6-8 minute, "debrief" presentation in class.*

*RECOMMENDED FORMAT:  Summarize the mini-team insights via POWERPOINT1-3 slides, MAX. Use the slides to save time & consolidate your insights.
