NOTE {READ THIS FIRST} --- Remember, this course examines various factors in operation when people interact. In preparing to study, it helps to think about the many  units throughout the course as interrelated, conceptual, and cumulative.

This means that you should know specific terms and their definitions, AND ALSO what that item "looks like" in action and in coordination with other human communication dynamics.   Also, be prepared to synthesize various course concepts and explicitly apply them to your explanations.

As you probably noticed in the feedback you received for Test #1 (Midterm),  more points will be given to those answers which are not superficial, and instead, analyze human communication by using concepts from the course to demonstrate  insights and a deeper understanding.

SOME FAQ's:

  re: TYPES OF QUESTIONS:
  • Question types  will include:   Terminology-Definitions,  Short Answer, & Brief Essay.    Be prepared to analyze, compare and explain You can expect 5-7 questions but they may be complex/multi-part.
  • Also, questions will not use the same exact wording as in the book. Similarly, you should plan to use your own words in your answers.
  • LOOK BELOW FOR ONE  ADVANCE QUESTION TO BE COMPLETED IN ADVANCE& SUBMITTED ON TEST DAY (+ ONE BONUS QUESTION-for extra points)
   re: PRIMARY CHAPTERS

  • Also take note of the now-familiar diagrams/figures [circumplex, comm.patterns, relational escalation, systems theory, etc]

re: LENGTH

The availability window is 3-4 times longer that the  "official" session slot.

-There are several reasons for the expanded access. Suffice it to say this also accommodates those with time conflicts or those requiring extra time

.

 re: ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES
  • On Test 1 (Midterm),  some  people lost points because of writing in general terms-- rather than citing specific terms/concepts from the  text & notes.
  • Review the handouts (online & hard copy) that have been used for class activities.  They  also indicate important concepts/terms from the text.
  • Review a  previous study sheet for sample question styles used in the past
  • As you review your readings, make use of the chapter preview information as well as the post-chapter summaries & questions to ensure that you have fully understood  & can apply the material within the chapter.
  • This semester, several extra-detailed slide shows were used to help you reinforce the textbook/course material . Be sure to review them as well.
  • Review any online quizzes - all of which now should be indicating the  correct answers. If you are unsure about how to access past quizzes, instructions are listed in the left column on my web page. The procedure might still work.
  • Of course, since this is an "at home" test, you will be able to refer to your textbook ; HOWEVER, this can slow you down if you sare not well prepared.
