PLUMMER'S (Human Comm.) PRINCIPLES TO REMEMBER: the FAMILY [i.e the PPTR-F's]
In Addition to the "Circumplex model", the "Family Communication Patterns model" & the other basic principles of Family Communication mentioned in your text (Beebe,/Chap12) , keep these additional 7 concepts in mind throughout our units & activities concerning the dynamics of Family Relationships & Family Communication.
More background for each of these will be discussed in class.
>1< The FAMILY is probably the single most influential agent of ENCULTURATION & SOCIALIZATION in our lives.
The family teaches us who we are & how we should "be" in our society & in our surrounding culture/co-culture ( e.g. Mother; Mi Familia; Monsoon Wedding clips))
>2< ALL families can be considered as FUNCTIONAL and ALL families can be considered as DYSFUNCTIONAL.
Since it operates as a system, the family has the ability to keep operating (functional) although it may be operating with patterns that are less-than-ideal or even harmful or unpleasant. (dysfunctional) ( e.g. all of the film clips) esp: Little Miss Sunshine [ & Wife Swap] )

Each family member brings his/her own elements to the table (e.g. attitudes, personality, outside experiences, talents, etc) {= INPUT factors}. As the people in the family interact, those input factors influence how they do things {= THROUGHPUT factors}. As a result, the members of the family as well as the family itself come out of the interaction phase with tangible & intangible results, such as revised attitudes, revised self concepts, family accomplishments, traditions, values, etc {OUTPUT factors}.
