Marching in Skokie The American Nazi party, a legally constituted organization in the State of Illinois and a registered political party, has applied for a parade permit in Skokie Illinois. Skokie regularly grants parade permits for holidays (Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Halloween), and for other groups, including the Little League. The American Nazi Party of Illinois has no direct connection with Skokie, any more than it does with any other town in the state. Skokie is a middle income suburb of Chicago with an unusually high Jewish population, with a large number of Holocaust survivors and descendants of Holocaust prisoners. Presumably, this is why the Nazi Party selected this town. As Mayor of Skokie, do you allow this permit? As a Justice of the United States Supreme Court, after the permit is refused and the appeal reaches you, do you grant the permit based on the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law…. |
