Suggestions for Doing Analysis of Visual Image
1. Check out pages 8-9 in The Presence of Others.
2. Your primary focus is on
the meaning that this image has for you--and how it came to have this
meaning (or meanings)? To this end, the following questions may be
helpful. However, do not just list your answers. You want this
analysis to read more like an essay than a sequence of freewrites:
a. What do you see
when you look at this image/object? How do you account for what you see?
b. What feeling(s)
do you get when you see this image/object? How do you account for what you
feel?
c. What are the parts
of the image/object? How would you describe them? (Remember the
difference between
how Carrie described her dolls hat and how Marcos described it.)
d. What stories lie
behind the image/object that give it the meaning that it has?
e. What people,
other images/objects, places, ideas do you associate with this
image/object? Does this image/object
serve to connect you with a certain set of people?
f. If there
were just ONE word or phrase that you could use that summed up the meaning of
this image/object, what
would it be?
g. What does this
image/object tell us about you? (Remember what Carrie said about her
doll.)
h. What
purpose/function does it have in your life? How does it achieve
that purpose/function?
i. Is
there any way in which you have mixed feelings or thoughts about this
image/object?
