Mid-term self-assessment.   2-3 pages.  Put in Learning Space submit for grading.  Read selections in Kahn handout. Continue Essay III work, mostly to solve writing problems that have arisen.  Work in groups and develop a time-line.  Develop questions for interviews or survey questionnaires.
Day 16

Final draft of Essay III due, printed, with metatext, and printed copy of previous draft.  Put in Learning Space, too.  Do work assigned by group. Library visit.  Report directly to the library--just inside the ground level.  I will be there to let you know where to go.  Bring your research questions with you.

Read the Si Kahn handout.   Work in project groups to plan, create timeline, aportion work, share information.

Do research according to group plan. Journal writing.   Introduction to Essay V.

Do research according to group plan.  Begin readings in Rereading America to prepare for Essay V.  Journal writing.

Conference with me sometime between now and Thanksgiving about Essay V.  For essay of your choice, enter reading summary and response into Learning Space (go into CourseRoom, click on Assignments, and click on "Begin Assignment" and find the #1 Essay V reading response). Journal writing.   Discuss readings.  Group work on project.

Do research and writing according to group plan.  Work on Essay V.  For essay of your choice, enter reading summary and response into Learning Space (go into CourseRoom, click on Assignments, and click on "Begin Assignment" and find the #2 Essay V reading response). Journal writing. Discuss readings.  Group work on project.

Write down the following:   (1) what you see as the issue/question you're exploring, (2) the position you take on that issue/question, (3) a list of evidence that you can use to support your position, (4) the points/quotes from the readings that deal with your position, (5) an idea for an introduction)  Do research and writing according to group plan for SHU community project. Plan first draft of Essay V.   Group work on SHU project.

Essay V, first draft with metatext.  Submit to Learning Space.  Do research and writing according to group plan for SHU community project. Full-group and small-group work on Essay V.  Group work on SHU project.
Day 24

First draft of Essay IV in Learning Space.  This should also go to someone else, too, possibly the Setonian editor, someone on Dawn Williams' staff, or someone on the panel that will evaluate your proposal--or whoever seems most appropriate.  Sign up for conference this week to work on Essay V (or possibly Essay IV.) Group work on draft of proposal or whatever writing you're doing for Essay IV.

Essay V, almost final draft.  New metatext.  Works Cited page.  Submit to Learning Space.  Bring to class the sources you've used. Editing work on Essay V.
Day 26

Essay V, final draft, printed, with new metatext and printed version of previous draft.  Also submit to Learning Space. Group work on SHU project and Essay V if needed.
Day 27

Final communication of Essay IV, either to a panel that considers your proposal or in the Setonian--or wherever your group and I have decided it has the best chance of making a difference.   Also submit to Learning Space. Discussion to prepare for presentations Monday.  Preparation for final exam.
Day 28

Prepare for group presentations on project. Presentations on projects:   10 minutes each.  Course evaluation.

FINAL EXAMBring all your work to date plus notes you've taken on this work in preparation for writing your final self-assessment.  It will be graded on your ability to make an argument for a particular idea about you as a writer.   Your evidence will be the writing you've done, plus any experiences in class.   Remember, good ideas are both complex and compelling and, at their best, take into account multiple perspectives.
