How Success Is Defined in Relation to Community | Success is determined by hard work and having good family values; America is an all-inclusive community that fosters individual success. Race or class isn't much of a factor. | Success is largely for those who are white; hard work doesn't determine success by itself. Success would mean getting a share of the pie to all people and that's not how things work in today's society nowadays. | Hard work determines very little if you grow up in the "wrong: community. Since "we want to be part of this great society," working to make this happen (as in union work) is more important than individual success. |
Importance of Belonging | |||
Community supports or compromises the individual | Military supported his goals. The nation/the army supported him as an AA because he was the first. | Community makes him compromise. The American Dream is not promoted by corporate community, especially at higher levels. Minorities don't have power within powerful communities. | Klan restricted but AA and labor movement enhanced freedom. |
